Located in a neighborhood in the Midtown Manhattan section of New York City, Times Square is a major tourist attraction and entertainment center in the Midtown Manhattan section of New York. It is right at the corner of Broadway and 7th Avenue, and it stretches from West 42nd to West 47th Streets with brightly decorated billboards and advertisements. As one of the world’s busiest pedestrian areas, it is the heart of the Broadway Theater District. Times Square is one of the world’s most visited attractions, bringing in close to 50 million visitors yearly. Approximately 330,000 tourists and locals alike walk through Times Square daily, while over 460,000 people pass through Times Square on the busiest days.  It is the world’s 2nd most visited tourist attraction, behind the Las Vegas Strip. It has had a higher attendance than any of the Disney theme parks worldwide. The high pedestrian traffic has resulted in $4.8 billion in yearly sales.

 Times Square is also where you’ll find the most popular Broadway hits. Theaters with huge animated neon and LED signs represent the urban aspect of Manhattan. You’ll come across ABC’s Times Square Studios, where Good Morning America is broadcast live every morning, and Hershey’s and M&M’s stores which are across the street from each other, as well as multiple multiplex movie theaters. The area also features restaurants such as Ruby Foo’s, the Bubba Gump Shrimp Company, Planet Hollywood Restaurant and Bar, and Carmine’s. A number of large financial, publishing, and media firms can also be found in this area.

Times Square is home to the yearly broadcasted New Year’s Eve celebrations. This is where you’ll see the New Year’s Eve ball drop at the stroke of midnight on the last day of the year. Millions crowd Times Square for the New Year’s Eve celebrations, more than than double the number of visitors the area sees daily. However, some reports state that on December 31, 1999, approximately 2 million people flooded Times Square.
